TAE is looking for an experienced and dynamic Machine Shop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our machine shop. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing workflow, and maintaining a smooth production environment. This role requires excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills to ensure the efficient operation of the shop, and the ability to continuously meet production goals.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Workflow Scheduling & Management:
    • Develop and implement effective schedules for workflow, ensuring timely completion of tasks.
    • Prioritize and manage work in process to meet established deadlines.
    • Monitor production progress and adjust meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Staff Management & Development:
    • Hire, train, and manage machine shop personnel, including technicians.
    • Cross-train employees to enhance flexibility and improve shop operations.
    • Conduct performance reviews and handle employee concerns.
    • Review and approve work hours and vacation requests depending on production needs.
  • Inventory & Tooling Management:
    • Regularly monitor and order tooling and materials necessary for shop operations.
    • Keep track of inventory, ensuring that parts and materials are available for production without overstocking.
    • Order and maintain shop tools and fixtures, making necessary replacements or additions as needed.
  • Production & Budget Management:
    • Plan and schedule production to meet budgetary goals.
    • Oversee production processes, ensuring quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Process Improvement & Engineering Collaboration:
    • Implement process improvements, including fixture designs and modifications to streamline workflow and increase productivity.
    • Work closely with the engineering team to develop and improve new processes for future growth.
  • Vendor & Customer Relations:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, ensuring timely delivery of materials and services.
    • Respond to customer inquiries and track project progress, ensuring that external processes are completed on time to keep production schedules intact.
  • Maintenance Coordination:
    • Coordinate maintenance and repairs for machinery to minimize downtime and ensure equipment operates at peak efficiency.
    • Regularly evaluate the need for new or replacement machinery to support growth and meet production demands.
  • NCR (Non-Conformance Report) Management:
    • Oversee the resolution of NCRs, ensuring timely responses and solutions to close out reports.
    • Issue and track work orders for repairs or rework needed in the shop.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Hold regular safety meetings with the team to promote a safe working environment and ensure compliance with all safety standards.
    • Continuously evaluate and enforce safety protocols and best practices.
  • Project Management & Reporting:
    • Provide regular updates on project progress and production status to senior management.
    • Quote jobs and communicate project timelines and costs to clients as needed.

Desired Skills and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, fixtures, and machine maintenance.
  • Proven experience in managing teams, including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Experience with budget management, and cost control.
  • Proficiency in using software for inventory management and scheduling (e.g., ERP systems, Corridor).
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in manufacturing environments.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies and automation.
  • Strong project management experience.
